The British Armed Services will mount an expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula in late December 2011. The expedition will be mounted in the 100th anniversary year of the last expedition of Captain Scott (Royal Navy) and will form the key element of the British military contribution to mark this anniversary. Rather than follow in Scott’s footsteps the team will instead attempt an expedition in the ‘spirit’ of the great explorer. The ‘Spirit of Scott’ expedition will therefore attempt to ‘explore remote areas of the Antarctic Peninsula, seeking to further the bounds of human exploration and knowledge’, very much in keeping with the ethos of the 1910-1913 expedition.
The expedition will sail from Chile in the 75 foot yacht Australis and cross the infamous Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula. Once on the peninsula the expedition will follow
Scott’s model by setting up a base from which to explore, and then dividing into three exploratory teams: The first two teams will take on the role of Scott’s “Northern Team” and will explore deep into the Antarctic Peninsula in order to make daring ascents of
previously unclimbed peaks and conduct scientific research . The third team will take on the role of Scott’s “Southern Team” which he lead personally and aims to complete the first full crossing west to east and back whilst completing scientific research.
This expedition will be the first expedition mounted to the mainland of the Antarctic Peninsula in which all three armed services will participate. It will be conducted in an environmentally responsible and ethical manner and aims to maintain the long traditions of the Armed Services in the field of Antarctic exploration. The team hope to live up to the standards of their forebears, captured so well by Tennyson in his poem ‘Ulysses’;
‘To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield’.
