Centenary Exhibition - Captain L.E.G.Oates: the Gallant Gentleman
Captain L.E.G. Oates: the Gallant Gentleman is a centenary exhibition focused on the life and service of the famous Captain Oates. A cavalry officer who had maintained the expedition ponies, Oates gave his life for his comrades on the return from the South Pole, leaving Captain Scott, Wilson and Bowers in their tent and walking out into a blizzard with the words: 'I am just going outside and may be some time.'
Captain Oates was a serving officer in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons, now merged into the Royal Dragoon Guards. The exhibition is showing in the regimental Museum in York.
